\ in cross reference

It's not just a backslash. It's a backslash followed by
a space, which is interpreted as a non-breaking space. 
In dialog boxes, the backslash is the "escape" character
that signals FrameMaker to interpret the following 
character(s) as the code for a special character that
cannot be typed directly. Such things as en-dashes,
em-dashes, non-breaking spaces, trademark symbols,
etc.  See Appendix A of the FrameMaker User Guide.
