Hmmm... 
2 thoughts: 

1) If you have the GIMP or PhotoShop, you could open the graphic and see waht might be going on.

2) A quick workaround would be to open the image full-screen in irfanview (or anyother app that will let you get a full screen display), and then do a screen capture of the displayed image.  There will be a little of the "Photocopy effect", but not enough for 99% of your audience to notice. It doesn't solve the mystery, but it would let you move along from where you are stuck.

Try this proof test -- try putting in a *different* graphic and seeing what
that does to the file size.
It may not be the graphic, but the anchored frame that is the problem.
