But don't forget this method copies and replaces the formatting too, unless your variable definition sets the formatting.

Hi, John:

Have you tried Find/Replace, as:

* Create the new variable.
* Insert one instance of it.
* Copy to clipboard.
* Find an instance of the old variable.
* Replace by pasting.

If this works, open all files in the book, save all files in the 
book, then Find/Replace across the book. Check representative 
replacements across the book before saving all files.
