My department has a job opening. My company makes hardware that is used
for analyzing wafers in Fab Automation labs (www.nanometrics.com).  If

Job Description
 
* Adheres to all Style Guides and Templates 
* Prepares and updates Hardware Operation and Maintenance manuals
* Creates and updates Technical publications for Manufacturing, Field
Service, Quality Assurance/Reliability, Corporate Policies and Training
* Gathers technical information, prepares written text, and coordinates
layout and manual organization 
* Researches available engineering information such as drawings, design
reports, equipment, and test specifications
* Writes individualized copy of analytical, interpretive, documentary,
or promotional literature
* Interviews engineers and other technical personnel
* Ensures that the documentation is transferred through to production
and that any errors in this process are rectified
* Keeps track of tasks and ensure that these are in line with the
project plan
* Notifies the Lead Technical Writer or Manufacturing Engineering
Manager of any slip in the schedule or additional requests
* Is aware of statutory/legal (such as Semi and CE) information that
should be included in the company's documentation
* Adheres to policy and version/number controls on all documentation
* Supports designated projects/products
* Continued professional development to highlight areas where knowledge
and experience should be acquired or enhanced.
Duties:
 
1. Purpose and scope
* Responsible for product documentation as designated by the Lead
Technical Writer
* This responsibility includes, but is not limited to, creation of user
& service manuals, appropriate product documentation and support of the
designated projects/products
* Establish and meet designated project/product objectives
* Report on status of designated projects/products on a daily basis (or
more frequently as required) to the Lead Technical Writer or
Manufacturing Engineering Manager 
* Ensure that customer/management expectations and specifications for a
project/product are met
* Assist other writers when requested/where appropriate
 
2. Duties:

* Produce product/project documentation in accordance with departmental
and company-wide procedures
* Follow departmental polices and procedures including, but not limited
to:
- Engineering design standards
- Configuration management
- Sustaining engineering
- Manufacturing engineering
- Release procedures
- Safety standards
* Follow company-wide polices and procedures, for example:
- Behavior
- Corporate Culture
- Dress code
- Health and safety
- House keeping
- Professionalism
- Time keeping
* Submit status reports to the Manufacturing Engineering Manager as part
of the weekly review meeting
* Perform any other reasonable duties as required by the Lead Technical
Writer or Manufacturing Engineering Manager.
 
Competencies:
 
1. Education and training
* Ideal candidates should be degree qualified, science/engineering or
another relevant field or have equivalent experience. Other applications
will be considered provided they have the relevant job experience. 
 
2. Required technical experience
* Requires working knowledge of customer requirements, various company
products, purpose and structure of documents, and user's level of
understanding
* Two years plus of relevant technical authoring experience in a company
that manufactures or distributes scientific instruments.
* Knowledge of semiconductors, semiconductor measurement tools and the
semiconductor industry is highly desirable but not essential.
* Demonstrated experience (with writing samples/portfolio) of writing
various Technical publications including user (operation) and service
manuals for technical products
* In-depth knowledge of Adobe FrameMaker (desktop publishing software),
Windows Office and one or more of the following:
 
- Adobe Acrobat
- Adobe PhotoShop
- Adobe Illustrator
- Photo Manipulation Programs
- Digital Camera
 
3. Management Experience
* No prior managerial experience is necessary or required.
 
4. Personal qualities
* Analytical and methodical with an attention to detail
* Flexible and positive attitude
* Self-motivated, shows initiative and common sense 
* Ability to work both independently and as part of a team with minimal
supervision
* Good written and verbal communication skills
* Willingness to gain knowledge of Nanometrics technologies, products
and markets (e.g. semiconductor industry).
