Oops, I meant to send this to the list, not just to Alison...

It's true that if you use Copy Special to copy the character formatting
of a selection, it copies all of the formatting characteristics rather
than just the tag. This means that you cannot do what you describe
by pasting the character formatting.

But what I would do in the case you describe uses a different approach,
but may require the installation of Shlomo Perets' Microtype User
Interface Customization. (It's been so long since I've worked on a
system
that wasn't set up with the customizations that I've forgotten exactly
what features are provided by that package.) First, I make sure that
the character tag in question is properly set up with most of its
properties set to As Is. Then I'd manually apply the tag to the first
instance of the text string I want to change. Then I'd find the next
instance (probably using the F3 key to repeat the previous Find
operation if I was using Find/Change) and then use F5 to repeat the
last character command, namely applying the character tag. Works
like a champ, but I think the F3 and F4 functions are ones that came
in Shlomo's package, which includes a file called customui.cfg that
includes the following two lines:
F3 <Modify FindNext <KeySequence /F3>>
F5 <Modify CharacterRepeatLast <KeySequence /F5>>
In other words, the command you need exists, but you may have to
do some work to gain access to the command.

Even if you don't want to install Shlomo's complete package,
you should be able to set up a custom command configuration file
that contains those lines. There's a soft manual in your FrameMaker
installation that provides complete (but not completely accurate)
documentation on the modifications you can make to the user
interface via configuration files and there's also a sample.cfg file
that shows four of the more common kinds of customizations.

My opinions only; I don't speak for Intel.

Does anyone know of a plugin, script or workaround that will allow me to
find/change text & character tags in one operation?

I would like to apply a character tag to a particular character that is
used in paragraphs of several different styles without changing the rest
of the attributes. As far as I can tell, Frame only lets me change
character attributes, not tags.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
