 I can verify that it is indeed the correct keystroke combo.

 There is also another (perhaps not well known) way to select a row (or column) using the mouse. If you put the mouse pointer "close" to a vertical cell boundary and double click it, you'll get the whole row selected. Similarly if you put it close to a horizontal cell boundary and double click it, you'll get the entire column selected. This saves you the bother of "drag selection" of a row or column.
