Another effective approach to to getting rid of no longer used condition
definitions is to create a clean empty template that contains only the
specific formats (paragraph, character, table, cross-reference) and
text conditions that you want to use going forward. Then you import
(by copying, not by reference) each chapter into the the clean template
and save it under the same name as the original chapter. You may still
get some unwanted formats in the new set of files with this approach,
but only in cases where the format is actually used in the document.
Unwanted character and paragraph formats will show up as overrides
(since you have imported only the content and not the format catalogs),
but any unwanted table and x-ref formats and text conditions still need
to be tracked down and retagged before the definition of the unwanted
item can be deleted.
