This is very similar to the change in paragraph mark property 
inheritance that happened after, uh, WinWord 6, I think it was.  This 
change in behavior was written up in "Word Annoyances" and MS was 
roundly chastised for doing it.  The explanations where always pretty 
half-assed and it sounded like the product manager had just decided 
to do this without an appreciation of the behavioral changes it would 
affect.  No amount of complaining got them to fix it, sadly, and 
we've had to make do with working around it since.

I hope that that this will get treated like a bug by Adobe and 
actually fixed instead of having a similar smoke-and-mirrors 
explanation without any resolution.
