Cannot import a .jpg

Hi, all.

I am using FrameMaker 7.1 on Windows XP SP3. I've just received many zipped .jpgs from someone else; FrameMaker gives me this error message when I try to import one:

"The filter encountered an error and could not complete the translation."

They are displayed with no problem in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

Any ideas as to what is going on and how I fix the problem? I don't know how the jpgs were produced initially but can go back to the source if need be.
