transparent background graphics

But FM will place a .psd...

A clipping mask will create a smooth, but hard edge.

Is anyone having problems with .psd's containing layer masks or vector masks
(resulting in a soft edge)or other layer transparency?

Just an addition to Winfried's fine message. It's not just a mask you want
to create, it's a clipping mask. Search Photoshop help for "clipping mask" 
for more information. You may also want to search for "clipping path."
