FM-9.0p237 - Distiller 8.1.0 colour/font odds

Klaus,

Forgive me if I'm not getting the idea that you're presenting, but
your sequence of PDFs and posts seems to confirm the long-standing
ideas that:

1.) SaveAs PDF from within FrameMaker uses a different workflow and
different options than Printing to a PDF logical printer, and
2.) SaveAs PDF is not the preferred method of creating a PDF. It's
been broken or flakey in multiple (all?) releases, and there have
been, or still are, problems in FM 9.

You may want to read this thread on the Adobe user-to-user forum.
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/315981 -- there are a number of other
similar threads on that site reporting similar missing font and
substituted font issues with SaveAs in FM 9. The patch releases for 9
are supposed to have fixed some of the issues, but I don't use SaveAs
myself because of the history of problems, so I can't give you
feedback on that.

My feedback would be to pick or define a set of Acrobat job options
you can live with (I usually start with Press Quality or High Quality
Printer myself) and use the Print command to generate the PDF.
Further, I'd highly recommend using the full version of Acrobat so you
can have Preflight tools available to troubleshoot both font and
separation problems.

PubliPDF has been highly recommended as a solid CMYK press prep tool
by others, but I haven't used it myself. It may, however, be worth
exploring. http://grafikhuset.net/PubliPDF/

Cheers,
Art
