Paragraph Designer Freezes

Maxwell:

I use unstructured Frame - so maybe that saves me some problems ;-)))

I have very little reason to work in Master Pages so that's unlikely a problem for me. And although my intent is to never have paragraph tags that are not in the catalogue, I am sure that I occasionally trip up.

I'll try to remember to keep an eye on the "active" tag next time this issue arises. Maybe I'll catch/correct a template error - which is always a bonus.

Thanks for the advice.

Alison,

One thing that I've documented which will cause paragraph designer freeze is
if you are in a paragraph that is not saved to the catalog. Example, you are
in *PageHeader paragraph, used only on master page, but the style was never
saved to the catalog.

Solution. Save the paragraph tag to the catalog. Hopefully this bug will be
fixed soon. I have downloaded all updates, followed all steps in all links
shown, and it still occasionally happens. More common for me in structured
than unstructured FrameMaker.

I've had this problem as well, and while I can link it to tab stops and
rulers it also appears at other times as well. It usually goes away if I
close up completely and then restart Frame - although sometimes I have to
reboot. It's also shown up when using the Character designer. I sometimes
get a low memory warning as well - so the reboot option makes sense!

When I reported it to Adobe nearly 10 months ago, their suggestion was to
follow all the steps in this link. I did that up to Step 5 (Run FrameMaker
in a simplified mode) - which was just way too time consuming. I actually do
have a job to do and it isn't being an Adobe troubleshooter!

I still get the problem occasionally so I just close up and reboot to get
rid of it. Nasty, but it works.

Hope this helps.

Hi Kelley and Carol,

I've been frustrated with this issue too. Finally I tracked it down to
moving tabs on the ruler - really weird. I have filed it as a bug with Adobe
but without any response yet from them.

Kind regards,

Carol,

I have been having this problem since I started using FM9 several months
ago. I have asked on the forum and gotten many replies. Yes it is always
when I am changing tab stops and indents with the ruler. I always have to
close FM down. I have tried bringing the Para Designer out into a floating
position and everything else anyone suggested. There are many people having
this problem. I think it is a bug. The last person told me that we should
report it to Adobe so we can get it fixed....Just to let you know......you
are definitely not alone with this problem.

Hi Shlomo,

So far, five people has responded to my email indicating that they, too,
experience this problem with some regularity. Neither they nor I have been
able to identify any specific sequence that triggers the freeze.
However, yours is the first information I've received that suggests a
workaround. Like you, I know for sure that it freezes when I'm adjusting tab
stops with the ruler. I will pay attention to what set of properties is
displayed when the freeze happens. If I can avoid a freeze by keeping Basic
properties on top, that would be very helpful. Thanks for the suggestion,
Shlomo.
