Unable to select, conditionalise, hide/show a variable in a text frame on left of master page

Hi,
Sorry for the long subject title, but this one is a bit hard to
summarise.

Windows XP, SP3, FM8p277.
This was all re-installed in the last few days, thanks to my PC
self-destructing. The problems existed before the crash and are just as
annoying now.

I have a vertical text frame on each master page (horizontal text frame
rotated through 90Deg), which I use for watermarking. The text frame has
a single paragraph (with tag Watermark applied).
The paragraph contains a single-word variable (called Watermark), which
says something like "Draft" or "Approval".
The variable should have condition Watermark applied, which I can then
hide or show as needed.

In some of my documents, and now all of my template files, The watermark
text frame misbehaves, particularly when placed on the LEFT of a page
(not so much when it's on the right). Experimentation by someone with a
great deal of patience reveals that the problem arises if the text frame
is within 2.75 inches of the left margin.

The misbehaviour is manifested as:

-Text frame on LEFT of page: When trying to hide conditionalised
variable text, the variable is completely deleted, or the condition is
removed and the text not hidden.

-Text frame on LEFT of page: When trying to select the variable, you
cannot single-click it to select, nor double-click it to open the
Variables dialog box. You can select the whole paragraph by
triple-clicking, but I usually only want to select the variable. You can
select the variable (according to my patient friend) by placing the
cursor before the variable, then holding dhow Shift + pressing the right
arrow key.

-Text frame on RIGHT of page: Works perfectly normally when it comes to
selecting. However, the removal of condition and/or variable does
sometimes happen.

I can send anyone willing to look at it a copy of misbehaving file. But
if you have any idea of what to check, please let me know. Various
things have been tried (such as turning off sidehead area, changing size
of text frame and paragraph text, moving text frame to where things
start to work again...).

All help gratefully received!
Cheers,
