type vs enter and STE

Gillian and Richard,

You're preaching to the choir, but this type of situation comes up a lot: if you try to strictly follow the rules, you discover that there is no easy way to express a simple concept.

Generally, each allowed word has only one assigned meaning, and each concept has only one allowed word to express it.

Thus "TYPE" can only be used as a noun name for a group of something, such as "type of lubricant" or "type of damage". You can't use it in any other way.

"ENTER" can't be used at all. You can put something somewhere, go into someplace, record data, or make an entry, but you can't enter.

STE was developed by The European Association of Aerospace Companies and specified by many of our customers. Mostly we follow the rules until they become impossible, then we just get as close as we can.

Clint,

That can't be right. Telling Users to enter or type text is probably the command we use most frequently. Simplified English must have a way for instructing Users how to do it. Otherwise, simplified English is completely useless.

Thank you,

In Simplified Technical English, which has a strictly limited vocabulary and is supposed to make documents easier to understand for international readers, neither of these terms is allowed in this context. I spent a few minutes and can't think of a "STE legal" way to write the requested instructions.

When I did some informal (very informal) questioning for a project, the users found it confusing to "Enter text" and "Press Enter". In my opinion (which will also show how old I am), I still feel you "type"
information if you're actually using the keyboard.
