font errors/problems

I'm getting a series of perplexing messages running a build script on a
large book, outputting PDF. Just after the PDF is saved, FM displays dialogs
about Entry Sizes, Angles, Variations, and Weights not found in the
maker.ini file, and do I want to save those values to the INI file. I answer
no to each and then see an Internal Error dialog, and FM crashes. 

When I look at the resulting PDF, the fonts are screwed up; when I examine
the INI file, the allegedly missing Entry Sizes, etc, values ARE stated in
the INI file. 

So I back up and manually use File > Print Book, which results in a
well-formed PDF, the correct fonts use, and no errors.

Anyone have a clue what's going on here? Or a fix?
