Spellcheck oddness in FM8

Hi Lea,

In the Spelling Checker you can also "Allow in Document".
As far as I know such words are then stored in the document
dictionary. You could find them if you search the MIF file.
Maybe you accidentally had clicked this before?

I mark items which I want to mark for editing later with a
series of questionmarks: ????????????????????
This is obvious enough to be seen, it can be searched with the
search window and it is typed very fast. Maybe something like
this would be safer for you.

Thanks to everyone who's answered so far. The language setting is set to US English in both Paragraph and Character Properties. I tried "Mark all paragraphs for re-checking" with no improvement. I restarted FM, and the results were the same. I'm frustrated at the "Learning" feature now. If I search in user.dct or site.dct for just "j" (which is one of the characters in the nonsense string), I still find nothing that matches it. On the other hand, if I highlight the whole string and click Unlearn, then it's found. Where are "learned" terms stored if not in those two *.dct files?

Do you get the same results after restarting FrameMaker? When we were on FM7, after a long session of multiple spell checks and search and replace operations, FM would suddenly stop finding misspelled words or the object of a search. It was like some kind of buffer filled up. When I restarted FM all would be fine.

Frame 8.0p277
Vista Business SP2 (although that doesn't apply here)

When stuck for text in a particular spot, I occasionally insert nonsense text as a placeholder. When I run spellcheck, it finds the nonsense and I finish the section. Yesterday, that tactic failed me. Spellcheck failed to find this:

alkasdjf;aidf;andslkfja;oij

What??

The options for Spellcheck don't seem to yield any clues (screen shot, those with text-only email):

That string is also not in user.dct.
