I got it. Once again, I was making it more complicated than necessary.

This is what I do.  I put User Variables in the footers of the master pages
for each file in a book (e.g. document name, publication date).  Each file
in the book uses the same set of variables (even if they are not used in
that file). When updating a book, I update the appropriate variables in the
front page file, and then import variables from that file to all the other
files in the book.  Only takes a minute or two.

Insert the variable in the appropriate place in the footer of the
appropriate master pages (the default Left and Right, plus any custom master
