I believe that the AutoTagger macro supplied as part of Paul Beverly's Macros for Writers and Editors book will do what you want.

I need a Word VB script written that will go through a Word file and add XML-style tags around character formatting. It would be something like this:

italics wrap in <i></i>
superscript wrap in <sup></sup>
bold wrap in <b></b>
red text wrap in <red></red>
small caps wrap in <smcaps></smcaps>

etc.
