What do you all recommend for showing "space" characters?

Hi, Alan.

An update (sent to the list too, in case it helps others). 

In LaTeX, the \textvisiblespace{} worked perfectly.

In FrameMaker, not surprisingly, it depends on the font. Some fonts have the U+2423 Open Box character, others do not (even though they may have other Unicode characters).

For example, in Consolas (which is what I use for fixed-width numbers and text), there is no U+2423, but I found an excellent alternative.

Specifically, U+02FD, Modifier Letter Shelf is pretty much the same looking character. Although, I do _think_ it is a tad lower below the baseline than U+2423, which actually makes it look better for my needs!
