I have been using SmartDocs for several years to manage a set of technical specifications that have to be produced in Word. It's dead stable and it's features for managing text snippets and variables are light-years ahead of Frame's.  My biggest document is about 300 pages and has hundreds of snippets and SmartDocs has never choked on it - even with multiple conditions applied.  I would never be able to manage this document in FrameMaker - it would be a nightmare.

Interesting to see that SmartDocs is still around. It even does conditional text.

License model only, $395-$695/pa, but the cheaper versions look fairly hobbled.
