Hi,
There is always a thin line over the footnotes. Does anyone know how
to change that line? (longer/shorter, move a few mm down, to the
left/right, thicker).

Choose View > Reference Pages and find the Footnote reference frame. Any
adjustments you make to the frame or the content of the frame will be
reflected above the footnotes.

Hi all,

I'm getting a missing font error in various docs. Is there a way to
determine in a large FM doc what fonts are missing and where FM is
looking for them? I'm using FM 7.2 on Windows. I'd like to find the
culprit text and solve the problem.

If you have a FM console program running, it'll show up in there.
If you don't, open Preferences, turn on Show Translation Errors, and
reboot FM....

Under Windows, FM would use the system settings for font locations.

The missing font message tells you what font is missing, and what font
FM is temporarily substituting. After you open all the problematic docs,
you'll find all the missing fonts and substitutions listed in the
FrameMaker console window.

That said, you can generate an Index (or List) of References and include
Fonts to get a complete list for your document or book.

If you're OK with FM's substitutions being made permanent, you can go to
Preferences and uncheck Remember Missing Font Names. If you'd rather
have different substitutions, you can map the unavailable fonts to the
substitutes of your choosing in maker.ini. See
Customizing_Frame_Products.pdf in your FM installation's OnlineManuals
subdirectory.

FM Console does show the font name(s) that are missing, but I haven't seen
it specify where the font is used that's missing. For that piece of Jon's
question, I'd use Find, Character Format, type in the missing font family,
and leave everything else as-is. This doesn't "see" the reference or master
pages, though, so if you can't find it this way, do the search again while
viewing ref pages and again while viewing master pages for each file in the
book.

That said, it seems like "out there somewhere" I saw mention of a plugin
that could search reference and master pages for various format stuff, but I
can't remember if it just generated a list of what's used where (maybe
hyperlinked) or exactly how it functioned. I don't even remember which
plugin it was or who developed it. (Fine lot of help I am.) But, maybe
someone else on the list knows and would respond. :-)

Hello all,

I am currently in the process of creating a new style for some manuals.
I really like manuals that have two columns per page, one column
designated for text and steps, the other designated for images and
figures. Unfortunately, some of the screenshots that I have to take are
large, and even scaling them down by DPI in the Object Properties dialog
box, won't benefit the manual because they don't look nice when output
to a PDF.

I feel that the easiest solution would be to create a master page with
two columns and another master page that allows for room for a large
graphic at the bottom of the page and apply it as I need it, but is this
really fast and efficient? I feel like it will cause more headaches than
ease-of-use.

What would anyone suggest doing to remedy these large graphics (besides
not using them), and allow it to be efficient?

Thanks,

Judie

Just to verify, to "print to the Adobe PDF PostScript printer driver
instance", I did the following:
File -> Print
Setup -> Name to Adobe PDF -> OK
Print

This does not work. It appears to work on Frame's side (albeit still
exceedingly slowly for some documents), but in the Adobe PDF printer
queue, I get an error message "the document failed to print".

When I check the "print to file" box, Frame does generate the .ps file,
from which I am able to produce a PDF successfully (and it seems to be
consistent). However, when the Adobe PDF printer is selected, this can
be quite a bit slower (several minutes vs. less than 20 seconds) than
when a physical printer is selected (although - I guess because the
printer is monochrome - the resultant PDF loses all colour information).

So I think there's still something not quite right going on here.

If in fact it works "sometimes" but not others, the problem has nothing
to do with having multiple distillers on your system. If you installed
the standalone version of Distiller that came with FrameMaker, it would
be available to uninstall from the Add/Remove programs control panel.

I would suggest that for reliability, you print to the Adobe PDF
PostScript printer driver instance in lieu of using the "save as PDF"
feature. Please advise if that works consistently.

It'd be much easier to import the screen shots into anchored frames
and set the frames to span both columns (what I'd recommend) and/or to
go to the bottom of the page... That would also allow them to float in
the text as it is modified.

Playing with special master pages would force you to manually
repaginate whenever your content changed...

If your PDF is coming out monochrome instead of color, one possible cause is
if you have the Adobe PDF virtual printer set to use the wrong driver. Open
the printer properties dialogue for Adobe PDF (Start Menu> Printers and
Faxes, right-click on Adobe PDF), look on the Advanced tab, and see which
driver is specified. It should be "Adobe PDF Converter." If you've got it
set to use a different driver, such as a the Generic Postscript driver, this
could be the cause of your problem.

Hi Fred, hi framers,

I've solved the issue by removing the character tags to format Level1IX
entries. Now the book will be also easier to maintain.

Thanks for your help and suggestions

Doug and Art,

Thanks so much for your responses, I will try these methods out and see
what works best for my situation.

As a follow up to this, would it be possible if I wanted text to expand
across both columns at the bottom of the page? Say, instead of adding in
a graphic to explain my steps, I'd like to add in a text box with some
information relevant to the text/steps that are in the two columns?
Would that then require a different master page?

It'd be much easier to import the screen shots into anchored frames
and set the frames to span both columns (what I'd recommend) and/or to
go to the bottom of the page... That would also allow them to float in
the text as it is modified.

Playing with special master pages would force you to manually
repaginate whenever your content changed...

I'm having a hard time visualizing what you're trying to achieve -- you
have a two-column page, and you want some text to span both columns? You
don't need (or want) a different master page -- that would be a
maintenance nightmare. You may need to define additional paragraph
formats that span columns. Take a look at the Pagination tab of the
Paragraph Designer dialog. Tables can also span columns -- depending on
your goal, you might look into that, too.
