[Framers] Zapf Dingbats

Since it is not built into the Adobe PDF printer, I'd say the reason for THAT was licensing fees.

Many people would argue with the reason you give for the "Base 14" PostScript fonts not being bundled with applications after a certain time. The official reason given by most software publishers was that the PostScript outline and metrics files were required to be built into all PostScript compatible printers as printer-resident fonts. This was not done in the early days of PostScript printers because the cost of non-volatile storage (e.g., EPROM) was not trivial. Once the "real" font files were ubiquitously printer resident, there was no need to distribute them in "soft" form with applications since there was no need to download them to the printer with each print job. Instead, it was only necessary to distribute simplified versions of the fonts to provide on-screen display and the font metric information needed on Windows systems for the printer driver to calculate line lengths for text wrapping. Of course, the whole landscape changed with the adoption of Unicode, but that's another story.

BTW, the "14" in "Base 14" refers to four variants (normal, bold, italic, and bold italic) of Times, Helvetica, and Courier plus the Symbol and Zapf Dingbats fonts.

Use unicode fonts; most modern fonts are unicode. A lot of glyphs are now available in standard fonts that weren't in thefonts before.

Also, purchasing Zapf Dingbats can't be that expensive. I found a copy of the Helvetica, Times and Zapf Dingbat fonts that Adobe no longer includes with FrameMaker in an old copy of Illustrator or Pagemaker that I had. I ran the installer and just chose to use those fonts. These fonts are likely to not include glyphs in the more modern versions of the same fonts.

The reason those fonts are no longer included is that they are not Adobe fonts and had to be licensed from somebody else.

I've opened a (very) old document which uses Zapf Dingbats which are not
on my current system. The document prints correctly from Frame 12, but
the screen display is gobbledygook.

What do people use for these fonts nowadays?

Thanks,
Theresa
