And if you are worried that a machine is about to die on you, you can always deactivate the license and install it on another machine. OS advancements are another can o' worms but usually Win users can get things to run on the newer OS versions.

Nothing happens. You bought a perpetual license for FM12 and it will
continue to work as long as the machine and OS allow it to.
