Karen,

The short answer to your question is no. However, when doing the convert to table process you are able to choose a table format to use as the target format for the new table. Be aware that the table format only allows you to choose one para format to apply to all the non-heading table rows, so you should design a table format that defines the first regular table row in a way that most of your table cells will require. The others will have to be reformatted. You can do this by column by selecting an entire column (minus the heading cell(s)) and applying the needed table cell format.

BTW: Retaining the original para formats would, presumably, give you table cells with multiple tabs in them, which wouldn’t make much sense in the single cell context.
