>From a practical standpoint (irrespective of what the application is concerned with), I've never had a problem with writes to a hard drive connected by USB, but I have had failures when using USB thumb drives. My solution is to only use thumb drives to transport files from one computer to another, copying to the thumb drive so I still have the original in my working directory. I avoid working directly on thumb drives if I can.
