Hi Alison,

You need two separate series counters, one for the numeric and one for the
alpha. You must also set your next paragraph tag for the 1st counter in each
series to be the continuation counter.

StepNumberBegin: N:<n=1 >.\t
StepNumberCont'd: N:<n+>.\t
StepNumberBegin_Alpha: S:<a=1>.\t
StepNumberCont'd_Alpha: S:<a+>.\t

The Next Paragraph Tag for StepNumberBegin and StepNumberCont'd should be
set to StepNumberCont'd.
The Next Paragraph Tag for StepNumberBegin_Alpha and StepNumberCont'd_Alpha
should be set to StepNumberCon't_Alpha.

You can then manually override the next tag where needed. Also, make sure to
set the Paragraph numbering for each chapter as appropriate - Restart
Paragraph Numbering or Continue Numbering from Previous Paragraph in Book
(Format > Document > Numbering).

HTH,

TVB
