We number our images as described earlier (a text box positioned below
the graphic with both the graphic and text box within an anchored
frame). <br>
<br>
In our case, our style is for the anchored frame is consistently 3.25
inches wide, variable height, right-aligned (on the right side of the
page), and anchored as "Run into Paragraph" with the text on the left
side of the page. Pretty standard.<br>
<br>
The graphic image itself is consistently 2.75 inches wide of variable height (depending on the subject being portrayed).<br>
<br>
NOTE: The reason for the slightly wider anchored graphic is to force the
text at the left side of the page to be no more than 3.75 inches wide.
Yeah, I know that the better way is to simply define that right-margin
in Format --> Paragraph --> Designer --> Basic, but even though
I prefer consistent page layout even if there is no graphic on the
right side, I lost that battle and sometimes we have full-page width
text, sometimes not. Some of you might recall my recent rants about my
recent battle to use running headers instead of simply the chapter name
in the chapter headers. This is a hell of a place.<br>

ANYWAY . . . <br>
<br>
The graphic numbering itself is done using a text string we named
"Section Graphic Counter" located inside the small text box below the
graphic (but inside the anchored frame).<br>
<br>
We found that one must be VERY detail-oriented with this stuff, because after having problems similar to yours (Nancy), we discovered the problem was in the syntax of the definition.<br>
<br>
Specifically, using Format --> Paragraph --> Designer --> Numbering, the building blocks were<br>
<br>
F:Fig. <$chapnum>-<n+><br>
<br>
Yet, we found that sometimes, for whatever reason, the building blocks on some counters were <br>
<br>
Fig. <$chapnum>-<n+> (note the missing "F:" preceding the word "Fig.")<br>
<br>
Clicking on a correctly defined Section Graphic Counter, then choosing "Update All" took care of our numbering problems.<br>
<br>
Our remaining problem is how to position the graphic counter box
consistently just-so; it's supposed to be flush left with the graphic
and just a teeny-tiny bot below the graphic (note the professional
distance description).<br>

was adding x-refs into the text methodically, going from figure to
figure. When I went looking for Figure 2-8, it wasn't there in the
Cross-ref'erence drop-down list.. The list skipped from Figure 2-7 to
Figure 2-10. I assumed that it happened because I'd put the captions to
Figures 2-8 and 2-9 into the anchored frame and Frame had not "seen"
them.<br><br><br>I didn't scroll down further, because never in 20 years has FrameMaker listed the figure numbers out of order. <br><br><br>But when I do scroll down in the listing in the Cross-Reference box, the list goes like this:<br><br><br>Figure 2-6<br>Figure 2-7 <br>Figure 2-10 <br>Figure 2-8 <br>Figure 2-9<br>Figure 2-9 <br>Figure 2-10 <br>Figure 2-8 <br>Figure 2-11<br>Figure 2-12<br><br><br>and on normally.<br><br><br>Now
I am hunting through the file using Find -- Paragraph Tag "Caption" to
see what it turns up. Maybe I've buried figure tags behind anchored
frames or some such bizarre thing. This problem is definitely related to
my use of Run-in anchored frames, which I've never used before . . .
