How do I get a single straight quote mark?

Martha,
Assuming you're hitting the key beside the Enter key, with both the
double and singel quotation marks on it and that's not working and
also the apostrophe key, under the tilde isn't doing it....
Does holding down Alt and typing 027 on the number pad do anything useful?
