I don't profess to understand the cause, though I have seen autoconnect
problems before.  But now that you've found it and believe it may be
from the import of data from Word, it is probably a good idea to perform
the "MIF Roundtrip" cleanup.  

Saving files to MIF format and then reopening those to recreate the .FM
document is a known trick to clean up a variety of odd behaviors in
FrameMaker, and remove (unwanted) artifacts that carry over during the
import process.  And it usually only take a few seconds per file.  Of
course, save copies of the existing FM files to archive just in case
(I'm not usually paranoid, but we all know stuff happens).
