If you really intended to ask the very broad question you asked, the
flip answer is RTFM. 

The slightly longer version is: FM uses a variety of defined and named
"formats" ("styles" in certain other software), including paragraphs,
characters, tables, and cross-references. Describing how to create,
modify, use, and update them occupies big chunks of the user manual,
online help, and third-party books on FM. If you're not comfortable
learning from those sources, maybe you should seek out training. 

If that isn't the question you intended to ask, maybe you could be more
specific.
