Character formatting in run head variables

Huntley--Thanks but we know how to apply the building blocks. The
challenge is finding a trick to enable a selectively applied character
format, like two italic letters or R with a strikethrough, to be
reproduced by the H/F 2 system variable. Or, a trick to enable using a
custom variable in the running head to pick up H1s and reproduce said
selective formatting.

You need to embed the character formats into the variable definition.
For example:

<Emphasis>Text goes here<Default font>
