I haven't had to. If anything I have had to go back the other way (since the
demise of FM on the Mac most Mac-based work is now LaTeX).

I have used some of the tools on there before, with moderate success.

Would be relatively trivial to make this into a shell script, negating the
need for a pipe.

Probably, the existence of the LaTeX->MML translators rather than LaTeX->MIF
has occurred because both LaTeX and MML use ascii only, whereas, while MIF
also uses ascii, it can also include binary data. Hence the second step,
MML->MIF.
