I think any of the special spaces will work -- I just tried a numeric
space (Esc <spacebar> n), and spell checker ignored that, too.
Here's another idea -- a variation of John's: If you don't want to
create a variable for each extension, create one named "0" and defined
as a period. Then you can insert it with Ctrl+0 0. That will barely slow
you down as you type. :-)
