Rick,

Thanks for the discount. I forwarded your message to my manager. He was having some trouble getting the information he needed to make a decision so I am not sure how quick the response is going to be. I will keep you posted.

First do a shift/save all, then a shift/close all.

After my motherboard went feral, I had to rebuild with a new
motherboard, cpu, video card, etc. XP Pro had to be coerced into working
again, but it was OK.

But my Acrobat Pro 8 installation now refuses to make PDFs using either
FM 8 or 7.1 with either Save As or print to PostScript. After a short
time, Frame stops responding, the top menu bar disappears, and it has to
be killed.

I've Repaired, Uninstalled > Repaired, Deactivated and Activated, and
muttered various incantations. Nothing seems to work.

Strangely, both Word and Excel do produce PDFs.

Any clues?

If you're using a version of Frame with an Undo feature, and you're
seeing an "OK to clear history?" dialog for every file you save, try
clearing this check box:

File > Preferences > General > Show warnings while clearing history

If you shift-alt-f, s before shift/close all, you won't be prompted. That many files will still take a long time to save, though.

Maybe one of the developers on the list has some insight...?!

Hello Framers

I am working in a Book file with over 400 chapters.

I am using IXgen and opening all files to perform updates.

Is there a quick way to save and close the files?

I am saving the book and using shift/close all files but it makes me
confirm OK save the file.

It takes over a half hour.

Any other way??

Thanks

Make sure the printer port "FILE:" still exists. If not, add it.

Start > Settings > Printers & Faxes
Adobe PDF properties
Ports tab
Note the port currently selected.
Find FILE: in the list?
If no, Add Port, Local Port, named FILE: (with the colon).
Reselect the previously selected port.

Hi All,

I have several unstructured templates in about 150 files. There are lots
of different table formats, though many of them are similar. What I need
to do is to narrow the usage and remove the unused table formats. Is there
a method in Frame 8 or a plugin that will help?

Any help is appreciated!

Hi Mollye,

I have a FrameScript script that will rename table formats. So you could
rename the formats that you are trying to eliminate to the ones you want to
keep. When the script renames the formats, it will delete the old name from
the table catalog.

The script is controlled by a simple INI file:

[TblFmts]
; Old format=new format
Employee Listing=Format A
PCCCOM With Lines=Format A
Product Table-Gray Heading=Format A

In this example, they are changing 3 table formats to Format A. The script
works on a single document or book. The cost is $40 and the script requires
FrameScript in order to run (http://www.framescript.com). Please let me know
if you have any questions or comments. Thanks.

Although I'd probably opt to use Rick's script, another way would be
to create a template using only the formats you want, and then use
Electropub's CleanImport plugin to impose those formats on the files
(which I hope would be in a book) -- the plugin deletes the missing
formats from the working files. Then you could do a simple conversion
from one format to another.

Or some other way to use one of these asset manageent tools with

Thanks!

I've used TortoiseSVN with my FrameMaker files (along with my insets)
for a couple of years and have not had any problems. Some thoughts:

+ Are the files stored on a server or locally? If they're on a server,
are the writers using mapped drives? Are the drives mapped with the same
drive letter (e.g., F:\)?

+ If the files are updated to a local directory on the hard drive, are
all writers using the same directory structure? This should be exactly
the same so that relative paths are maintained.

I'm not convinced it's an SVN problem. My guess is that it may be
directory structure related.

My client started using imported text insets for some boilerplate
paragraphs. In the folder tree, the folder of boilerplate source files
is at the same level as the folder of the FM book. Both folders are
checked into TortoiseSVN, an open-source client for Subversion, a

Every time a different writer opens a FM file that uses one of the text

unresolved. Re-importing the text inset fixes the problem for that
writer. Every writer opens the same FM file and imports the same text

folders to a location outside SVN and the problem did not occur, so it
has something to do with SVN.

By the way, the book folder contains a subfolder of Xrefed image files,
and SVN doesn't interfere with those links. We're going to try Xrefing
the text insets instead of importing them, but Xrefing them means we
lose the formatting and markers (Index and Hypertext) in the source
files.

So ... anyone know what's going on here with SVN?

You would not need to get locks for any text insets. Just the main
document (unless you are making changes to the text inset itself).

With multiple writers it's good practice to use the exclusive lock
feature of SVN with FrameMaker files. SVN can't merge FrameMaker's
binary files and manually merging two writers' changes is a pain. Take
my word for it.

Mike,

This is shot in the dark, but are you using exclusive locks and the
svn:needs-lock property? If so you might need to get locks for more than
just the file you're opening.

We're currently using WWP 2003 to generate CHM from our Frame docs, but
since there's no support past FM 7.2, we're evaluating our options. This
week I've been looking at Mif2Go.

We want to make the most of our existing Frame markup for Related Topic
buttons and drop-down hotspots. Out of the box, Mif2Go doesn't support
the WWP system for drop-down hotspots, and it doesn't support buttons
based on a Related Topics list. (ALinks and KLinks are supported.)

But Mif2Go has a macro language that seems to be up to the task. The
necessary macros would be virtually the same for anyone contemplating a
migration from WWP. This leads me to ask whether anyone has already
developed "boilerplate" macros that they are willing to share.

Does anyone know what to call the type of menu where you click on the
plus sign and then the plus sign changes to the minus sign and the menu
displays below?

Microsoft MoS:

"expand, collapse

"Pertains to a folder or outline. The user can expand or collapse these
structures to see more or fewer subentries. A plus sign next to a folder
indicates that it can be expanded to show more folders; a minus sign
indicates that it can be collapsed."

Does that help?

I'll stop saying Microsoft is arrogant when
Windows stops saying "Welcome" and instead asks "May I?"

MS Manual of Style for Technical Publications calls it several different terms, depending on the functionality. See Dialog Boxes and Property Sheets in the MS MoS.

Good! You're not the only WWP user doing that... ;-)

We do have one of our own with the usual large set of options.
See User's Guide par. 6.9, "Including expandable sections in
Help topics". We're not familiar with the WWP method, but if
you tell us what the markup for it is in Frame, we'll see what
we can do to support that out of the box.

>and it doesn't support buttons based on a Related Topics list.

I don't quite understand that; "Related Topics" *are* ALinks.
See par. 8.6.3, "Configuring ALink and KLink jumps for HTML Help".

You might also want to look at our browser-based OmniHelp; we
have a different way of using ALinks in it that provides a more
consistent navigation UI. We added a tab in the left navigation
pane for Related, and show all the topics that share an ALink
with the current topic in it. No button or popup list needed.

We'd like to know that too; if they exist, we'd be happy to include
them in the User's Guide, and in a macro library file that would
be part of the distro. We don't actually have WWP ourselves, so
we'll need the help of those migrating to Mif2Go from WWP to do that.

Thank you for raising this issue!

An abomination? ;-)

I've commonly seen the plus/minus boxes as nodes in a directory or tree
structure, but I don't think I've ever seen a _menu_ that used them. And
I'd rather not.

But maybe I'm thinking of the term "menu" too narrowly -- to me, it's a
set of commands listed under one of several top-level names (like File
or Edit), or displayed in response to a right mouse click (context
menu).

If you're using the term more broadly to refer to a list of values,
options, etc., I'd call it a list. If my audience were computer novices,
I'd call it a "drop-down list" and explain how to display it. But only
for real novices.

In general, I don't name interface elements, just their labels. If
necessary for clarity, I'll refer to the X list, Y box, or Z button. But
I generally don't use terms like combo list, drop-down list, multi-edit
box, tree node, etc. Readers usually don't care what interface designers
call some widget as long as they can find it and understand what to do
with it.

Pretty much everyone who isn't completely new to computers knows how
menus, lists, trees, buttons, check boxes, and radio buttons work.

I too do not recall seeing these referred to as menus, but they often
turn up as states of a hierarchical information tree that gives access
to various program functions. The two states being expanded (-) or
collapsed (+).

If I were to call it anything I guess it would be a tree and use terms
like "click [x] to expand", "click [x] to collapse", "click on [x],
then...", etc. Usually the trees I have seen are within a zone on the
interface and so I tend to refer to the zone's name, so "in [zone y],
click on [x]", ...".

Cheers
Alan

We've called them a "tree menu" in the past. That gets 944000 hits on google. Seems to be a javascript term.

"Expanding menu" is also a javascript term but looks like it's not for those +/- menus.
