Dictionary style running heads: some queries

Hi Framers:
I have FrameMaker 8.0p277

I love the ability of FM to generate dictionary style running heads,
but these only seem to work with index entries which also have discrete 
subtopics i.e. the main index subject line is on its own in the generated 
index file, followed by the indented sub-topics

Thus,

"Index entries
    alphabetical.............page number
    numbered...............page number
    etc.........................page number"

works fine and "Index entries" appears in the running head nicely, i.e. 
alone.
using a paratag as a variable in the header.



BUT if an index topic is solo, i.e. only one entry in the entire book e.g.
"Pakistan...................page number"

what appears in the running header is

"Pakistan...................page number"

when all I want is, of course, "Pakistan"

There is a mention in the FM help file but it stops just short of 
explaining.
