Quoting from the Frame 5.5 manual (seems I heard those same words
recently)

page 12-12 - Default values for System Variables

Most of the system variables can be inserted in any text frame on a body,
reference or master page. The Current Page # and Running H/F 1, Running
H/F 2, Running H/F 3, Running H/F 4 variables can inserted only in a
background text frame on a master page.

Current Date (Long) <$monthname> <$daynum>, <$year> October
11, 1996
Current Date (Short) <$monthnum> <$daynum>, <$shortyear> 10/11/96

Happy Easter,

Subject
variable date incorrect -- how to fix

Quick question that I can't seem to find documented in FrameMaker 8.0 (on
a Windows Vista platform).

I inserted a variable for "Creation date (long)" in my master page footer
and it displays July 1998.

Where is the feature to allow me to specify a desired month and year?
