Auto-Numbering Problem

Depending on your use of the two sequences, you don't need to have different identifiers for the numbering series, but would have to redefine the numbering definitions.

For example, if you only have the List styles as sub-steps under a numbered set, then they should be in the same series and the definitions can be simplified to:

Numbered1 <n=1>< =0>.\t  with NextParagraph set to Numbered
Numbered  <n+>< =0>.\t   with NextParagraph set to Numbered
List      < ><a+>)\t     with NextParagraph set to List

In this setup, the two numbered styles reset the second-level counter for the List style (note you don't need a separate 'first' version) to zero by including the < =0> building block, so that if a list is added after a numbered item, it will always start with 1.

If instead you use either a numbered sequence or alphabetic sequence as a standalone list, then you should either identify them as distinct numbering series by adding an identifying label (any printable character followed by a colon at the start of the numbering property), such as 

Numbered1  N:<n=1>.\t   with NextParagraph set to Numbered
Numbered   N:<n+>.\t    with NextParagraph set to Numbered *
List1      A:<a=1>)\t   with NextParagraph set to List
List       A:<a+>)\t    with NextParagraph set to List *

or by using an empty building block as a placeholder so the counters are distinct from one another:

Numbered1  <n=1>< >.\t   with NextParagraph set to Numbered
Numbered   <n+>< >.\t    with NextParagraph set to Numbered *
List1      < ><a=1>)\t   with NextParagraph set to List
List       < ><a+>)\t    with NextParagraph set to List *

* It is not necessary to set the NextParagraph property to the same style as is being used, as that is the default behavior - to add a new paragraph with the same tag and characteristics.

ps - Tammy, your "StepLetterContinued - L: :<n+>.\t" defintion will generate a numeral, where I think you meant to use the <a+> building block for a lower-case letter

result. In FM's Online Help, serach for Series Label for the full blown
detail. I don't see any series Label in your definitions, so FM can't
properly number your steps.

I am using the following auto-numbering scheme and can get the
"numbering" to pick up where it left off after using auto-numbers a),
b), c),...  Here is an example of what I get:

a)  First substep

c)  Third substep

       5.  (Should be 4th step)

What can I do?
