Acrobat 9 Frustrations...

Hi Dov... Thanks for answering.

I was able to generate PDF with the same combination of Maker 8 and Acrobat 9 for the same files on my XP machine. That's what led me to think about Win 7. I also never had any PDF generation problems with earlier versions of Acrobat, but with Acrobat 9 I've seen bizarre issues... The hoops I had to jump through to get TCS Acrobat working on my other machine were shocking. So I also suspected that Acrobat 9 contributed to the problem.

If what you say is true and final, then the answer is I should use my new machine as a door stop, pay to replace the burned out monitor on my old machine (and get a new battery and power supply), and use that for another 7 years. I have to use Maker 8 and Acrobat 9 because that's what my customers use. (And they can successfully generate PDF with the same templates.) Note that they are still on XP, I might add.

I have a version of Maker 7.2 laying around. I could write a plugin that traps Save As PDF, saves the book as Maker 7 files, starts Maker 7, and saves as PDF. Or I could run my old machine as a server, and use it to generate PDFs... But then I have to pay for a FrameMaker Server license, right?

Sigh... I'm venting, I'm afraid. This really is a show stopper, after many thousands of dollars invested in a new machine, and setting that machine up to work in the various environments I need. I know there's some sort of cause for this, which means there's some sort of workaround. Darned if I can find it, though.

Whatever problem you are experiencing has nothing to do with Windows 7 or Acrobat 9, but
probably relates to problems with FrameMaker 8.

For the record, the "hotfix" is for Windows XP and Vista only. Windows 7 already is fixed for
the issues for which the hotfix applied. Furthermore, the issue was NOT the PostScript driver,
but rather, the internal GDI graphics subsystem in Windows that had some problems associated
with font handling and caching.

Unfortunately, I do not know exactly what the problem was with FrameMaker 8, but there
were any number of issues associated with printing and PDF production from FrameMaker 8.
