I've got it now - thanks to everyone, especially Rick Quatro.

Earlier today in another thread, Lea Galanter asked if anyone new of a Master Pages course. I could something like as well!

If I understand your problem correctly, I think the solution is pretty straight-forward.

1. In the file, View Master Pages.
2. Create a new Master Page format and name it something like First.
3. Adjust the header/footers as needed (along with any other page layout changes).
4. Go back to the View Body Pages for the file.
5. Make sure the first page of the file is visible, then select Format > Page Layout > Master Page Usage.
6. In the dialog, select your "First" page in the Custom field, and make sure Apply To is set to Current Page.
7. Click Apply.
8. Go back to your file and display page 2.
9. In the Master Page Usage dialog, click Left/Right and the Apply to Even pages. Click Apply.
10. Go back to your file and display page 3.
11. In the Master Page Usage dialog, click Left/Right and the Apply To: Odd pages check box.
12. In the Pages field, make sure you change the "from" page to the third page of your file. Then click Apply.
After completing this process, your file should have a custom page for only the first page and then use the standard L/R pages for the rest of the pages in the file.

Hope this helps.

I've been through the FM 9 manual and Scriptorium's Unstructured Frame 8 and all I can find is a mention that what I want is possible - but no instructions on how to do it.

I need to create a new Master Page setup for a document (not a Book). I want a first page that is different as I need to use the footer for contact info, copyright statement, release date, etc,. The rest of the document should use the standard right/left layout with page numbers (beginning on page 2) and always ending with an even numbered page.

The document itself is very straightforward, with a header and footer and single flow body.

I have a basic Right/Left setup complete, but now I need to figure out how to create that special first page and have my (unused) Body view show 2 pages. So far, no luck. As this will become a much used format - replacing a whole host of small MS Word docs - I need to get this figured out. Any help would be appreciated.
