To verify what Java the machine has, type java -version at a command prompt. If it doesn't return the version number, either it's not installed or it's corrupted and a reinstall is in order.

Subject: Java error Message when importing xml to frameMaker 8
Do you have a good Java runtime installed? I'm guessing Maker needs Java to run
Xerces (funny, I always assumed they used the C++ version). Somehow it can't
find a runtime. So you need to verify that you can run other Java programs on
your system. (Just grasping at straws here, but that's the first thing I'd
try.) If you do have a JRE properly installed, I would worry about version
compatibility. I thought Java wasn't supposed to break backward compatibility,
but maybe that's your problem -- too new of a JRE???
That's the area I'd consider. If all else fails, try re-installing jave. If
that fails, try re-installing Maker???
By all means, try editing your Registry, but NEVER tell anybody I suggestat that
is a good idea. I will categorically deny it.
