insert Greek symbols

John and Clint,

There was an earnest and well-presented rant a couple of years ago advising
strongly against using the Symbol font to create common Greek characters.
The reasoning was that if you print to something in which the Symbol font is
not installed, it can have disastrous consequences. (The example was a
scientific paper in which a mu in Symbol font would change to an m in a
standard font, changing the notation for scientific measurements by three
orders of magnitude. That would be Bad.) The advice at the end was to use
"u" to represent µ. I don't go that far; I use

If I may pick a tiny nit, ALT+077 is a capital M which then needs the Symbol
font to become a mu. On the other hand, ALT+0181 is a native mu (µ) as is
ALT+230 (µ). Here's a list of Greek character codes for the OCD completists
(*raises hand*):
