master pages for table of contents

These are very good questions to go into the Frame documentation and look
up. I'd look up importing formats, formatting a TOC, and so on.

The specific details should be in the documentation and would take a long
time for someone to type out here for you. Go look at that info, try what
the instructions say and then come back with specific questions.

hello bill,
thanks for the reply.

i will try this.
the thing is: my chapter has a first, right and left page. does all of this
get applied when i import page layouts from chapter to toc? only the right
and left seem to get applied.
i want the first page of the TOC to have a text frame that is smaller than
the right page, so that i can add a "contents" frame above it.

also how does one get page numbers to appear, in this method?

thanks

You should have FM automatically create the TOC file and then import
your page layouts from the chapter file into the TOC, then modify the
TOC styles as needed to fit that layout. That's it.

The reason "nothing is working" is likely because per your process the
TOC file in your book contains no TOC elements on the reference pages
for FM to use in building a TOC. Best practice is to import layouts
into a generated TOC file.
