Michael,

1. Update FrameMaker 9 to 9.0p245 (which is the latest version).
You may want to check for updates. I'm using FM 9 Version: 9.0p255

Art + Richard--

Thanks for your responses. And some answers:

. This script is now and has for some months been running on a
single machine.

. The script was running fine without alteration, producing no
errors, and then . poof, the font problems began.

.         Am running FM9.0p237.

.         Here's the info in maker.ini:

DisplayUsingPrinterMetrics=On

;

; Sizes which will appear in the Format dialog boxes:

;

Sizes=7pt, 8pt, 9pt, 10pt, 11pt, 12pt, 14pt, 18pt, 24pt, 36pt

;

; Definition of the font vocabulary:

; Angles, Variations: a list of the words.

; Weight: the list of words and the associated weight for Windows, if any.

;

Angles=Regular, Kursiv, Slanted, Oblique, Italic, Obliqued

Variations=UltraCompressed, ExtraCompressed, Compressed, Condensed, Narrow,
Regular, Wide, Poster, Expanded

Weights=Thin 100, ExtraLight 200, SemiLight 250, Light 300, Book 300,
Regular 400, SemiBold 600, DemiBold 600, Bold 700, ExtraBold 800, Heavy 900,
Bolded 700

. The script specifies AdobePDF as the printer driver; that is also
the default printer set on this machine. I see nothing else in the script
that manipulates fonts.

. The script developer is available, and not me, but is stumped by
all this as well. Like I said, it began happening out of the blue: no
changes in machines, drivers, script, fM versions. Go figure.

That's what I know.

Art's question is a good one, and if you're talking different machines, the
installed fonts could also be an issue.

Here's another question: What's your script doing, font-wise? I've never
seen dialogs such as you describe (what version of FM is this?), but it
sounds like your script is attempting to do some run-time font mapping
(that's what the references to size, angle, variation, and weight suggest).

Further question: You say "the allegedly missing ... values ARE stated in
the INI file." Can you post the entries you're talking about to the list?
That might help clarify what's going on.

My own WAG is that your script is attempting to do something it either (1)
shouldn't do at all or (2) should do differently. Are you the script author,
or is the script author available?

That all looks good. And yet, the error messages are telling you those entries don't exist. So, trouble-shooting step 1: Are you sure you're looking at the right maker.ini file -- the one at the location specified in the error messages (the FM9 home directory)? Search your C drive for files named maker.ini. It should find two -- the one in the FM9 home directory and your personal version (somewhere in your user directory tree; don't recall exactly where, and it varies with Windows version). (FM reads them both. Your personal one generally contains only settings specific to you, like window locations, recent file list, etc.)

I don't know how it could happen, but perhaps you're looking at a third maker.ini file somewhere that has the correct entries, but FM is looking at a different maker.ini that doesn't.

Trouble-shooting step 2 -- you said:

What happens if you answer Yes to each of those dialogs?

Trouble-shooting step 3: ... umm ... I can't think of a step 3 right now. :-}

I may have some small money for a three-week contract in Lexington MA starting next week.
It would involve getting a bunch of screen captures (SnagIt 10) and then a lot of proofreading, and maybe some RoboHelp work.
I work in FM10, but if you know FM9 you can do this work. (Earlier versions are OK too, but the UI is new and different).

This is not yet approved by the guy who writes the checks, but if you think you'd be interested, contact me offlist:

John,

>From the error message I assume you are running on Windows 7. I think it wasn?t mentioned before.

Normally you cannot write to files in the program files folder structure, but if you try to do so, the system may write the file to a ?VirtualStore? folder structured which is created in
C:\Users\<your user name>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore
As a result, you may have three copies of the maker.ini. I am not sure, how applications that were published before Windows 7 handle that VirtualStore. You should compare the different versions if you find anything that gives you a hint. Well, the version in
C:\Users\<your user name>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\FrameMaker\9
is not a complete version, it just contains additional settings or overrides to the settings in the installation folder maker.ini.

As you already guessed, something has definitely changed on your system, and if it is nothing FrameMaker-related it could well be something regarding the logged-in user, maybe some hidden changes to the user rights?

I would:
1. Update FrameMaker 9 to 9.0p245 (which is the latest version).
2. Give the current user Administrator rights. If you think the last action is too much, then allow the current user to change the FrameMaker installation folder.

- Michael

FM 9 Version: 9.0p255
Unstructured
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate, 64 bit
FM Experience: 2+years (mostly self-taught - and I suck at Master Page set-up :()

This is further to yesterday's question on Pagination.

I have created a Book with files using only double-sided pages (as I do with all my Books).

In this case, the book consists of:

Title page (starts on right, 2 pages only, second page blank)
TOC (starts on right, even number of pages, numbered i, ii, iii, etc)
Chapter 1 (starts on right, even number of pages, starts numbering at page 1)
Chapter 2: (starts on right, even number of pages, numbering continues form Chapter 1)
Appendix A: (starts on right, even number of pages, numbering continues form Chapter 2)

My problem is that this series of booklets will only ever have less than one page of TOC - which I would like to create as page 2 of the Title page file.

To make this happen, I have set up the Master Page of the TOC so that the Header and Footer of "page i" look like a left page, rather the right page it actually is. Once I have printed the book and distilled to PDF, I delete pages 4 and 2 so the TOC appears on the back side of the Title Page, even though it started out as a right page.

Is this my only choice or is there a way to combine the Title Page and TOC in one file to get what I want?

FYI: The Title Page has no Footer, while the TOC does.

One additional thought --- are the fonts there and not corrupted?

I've had enough problems with certain font files getting corrupted that
I have a zipped set of them stored on a different drive for rapid
replacement and I usually run chkdisk or SpinRite on the drive before
reinstalling to make sure I'm not accidentally saving things to an iffy
sector.

Try this:

Title page -- Double-sided; Start on Right; Delete empty pages; Page numbering starts at i
TOC -- Double-sided; Start on *Next available*; Make page count even; Page numbering continues from previous
Chapter 1 -- Double-sided; Start on Right; Make page count even; Page numbering starts at 1

Note that the "Start on next available" option is only available when setting the pagination properties from the book window, because that option has no meaning for a single, isolated file.

The only thing that *might* be a gotcha is the page count setting for the TOC. It *might* be necessary to set that file to "delete empty" rather than "make even". For the last 5 years, I've been using corporate templates that are single-sided only, but my recollection from my last job is that the setup I detailed is the one that works.

Hi all,

I'm using FM 9 on Vista 7 64.

After I generate a PDF, I always set a number of parameters such as initial view at opening (page layout, zoom, etc.), security parameters, etc.

Is there any way to have those parameters already set in a .ini or any other file, to avoid the task of setting them after pdf generation?

Thank you very much in anticipation,

Mathieu.

I believe (somebody else probably knows better) that all those settings are contained in the joboptions file that Acrobat uses.

Hi Mathieu,

The Settings tab on the PDF Setup dialog box allows you to set open options
for the PDF created from FrameMaker. Security settings can be quickly set
for a single PDF for multiple PDFs in Acrobat by using an Action sequence.
What version of Acrobat are you using?

Subject: Pdf settings

Hi all,

I'm using FM 9 on Vista 7 64.

After I generate a PDF, I always set a number of parameters such as initial
view at opening (page layout, zoom, etc.), security parameters, etc.

Is there any way to have those parameters already set in a .ini or any other
file, to avoid the task of setting them after pdf generation?

Thank you very much in anticipation,

Mathieu.
