Section Graphic Counter (was: Positioning Caption Under Run-in Figure)

Hi Nancy,
Yes, we created a paragraph tag with that name and defined it as described.
But a previous member of the tech pubs department here haphazardly did what he
wanted to do. He couldn't write, wouldn't follow directions, wouldn't
spell-check, wouldn't proofread, but DID create or modify paragraph tags to his
liking.
So, yes, and when we built one book using another as a template, we sometimes
found problems with its graphic image numbering thanks to this guy.
So yes, the paragraph tag should be defined as "F: Fig. <$chapnum>-<n+>"
This results in (for instance) "Fig. 2-3" (the third graphic in section 2 of the
book).
One caveat: In order to make sure your first graphic of the current book section
is numbered "1", you have either of two methods to use:
* Create a separate paragraph tag called "Section Graphic Counter 1" and define
it as F: Fig. <$chapnum>-<n=1>OR
* Remember to go into the building block field to change "n+" to "n=1" and
click "Apply"Otherwise, the first graphic of the next book section will be the
next sequential number from the previous book section. There's nothing like
overlooking this and then seeing your 300-page pdf coming out with the first
graphic of section 6 as "Fig. 6-234" (or whatever). Just catch it before you go
to print or post it online for the universe to see.
When it works, it works beautifully. When it doesn't, you just want to scream.

" Ken, thank you!
To understand your description fully, I have a couple of questions.
You wrote: "The graphic numbering itself is done using a text string we named
"Section Graphic Counter" located inside the small text box below the graphic
(but inside the anchored frame)."
By "text string" do you mean paragraph tag? If you mean something else, I don't
follow what that could be.
If "Section Graphic Counter" is a paragraph tag, did you use F:Fig.
<$chapnum>-<n+> as the counter in this tag?
You wrote:
"Yet, we found that sometimes, for whatever reason, the building blocks on some
counters were
Fig. <$chapnum>-<n+> (note the missing "F:" preceding the word "Fig.")
Clicking on a correctly defined Section Graphic Counter, then choosing "Update
All" took care of our numbering problems."
By "in some counters" do you mean that you had various instances of the
paragraph tag Section Graphic Counter that had been manually changed so that the
counter did not have the "F:"?
So when you clicked one of the correct Section Graphic Counter paragraph tags
and Updated All to match that one, your counting problems went away?
Thanks.
