It's not the image that you need to select, it's the anchored frame or graphics frame into which you imported the image. This can be a little tricky sometimes. Open the Graphics palette and make sure you have View > Borders turned on. Click the mouse on the dotted-line border of the frame, not on the image inside it. Then in the Graphics palette, click Set Fill Pattern and in the Fill dialog, click None.
