And BookVars from Leximation (see http://leximation.com/tools/info/bookvars.php) is an excellent tool for the job - I maintain all my variables at the book level for consistent use.

As I have also mentioned before, it is the single most used add-on to FrameMaker that I have. Highly recommended.

And I believe if you create a book which contains each of the needed books, you can complete the task with one import.

Yes, Edwin will have to open each book to do this, but it's still faster than editing one file in each book and importing from there.
