mass update of system variable

Hi Lin,

Thanks very much for this help.

I created a MIF file with the system variable definitions I required and
then imported that into different FM books. It worked a dream, as it
didn't change the user variables defined in the document (which was my
concern).

thanks again,

Edwin

If it helps any, I learned to do this from Shlomo. :)

Yes, Edwin will have to open each book to do this, but it's still faster
than editing one file in each book and importing from there. I don't think
there's a plugin available that will do any better than that.

Hi Lin,

I was sure.

If you open a MIF snippet to be able to import formats
from it, all variables which are not defined in the MIF snippet
are populatead with the default values. That’s why I never used
it to import formats from it. However, if you do import formats,
it seems that these default values are _not_ imported although
they are there. Strange.

If you import the MIF snippet as a file, then you can import it only
into a single file. Of course you can then import variables into
all other files of the book. However, this is not what the poster
wanted.

I would make a book with all the files (from all the folders
and subfolders) and use one of the plugin to import a single
variable.

Best regards

Winfried

Really? I've used a MIF snippet in the last month to update all the
variables in a book file, and that was in Frame10.

(ETudsbury, I forgot to say that you have to reopen the MIF file in
FrameMaker, but I figured you'd know that since the file you're importing
from has to be open.)

Hi,

MIF snippets do not work.
You can import the MIF snippet only via import by copy
into a single file. If you would then import the variables
from this file into other files (via import formats), you would
import all variables.

I would recommend to check the variable plugins from
Leximation and Silicon Prairie Software:
http://leximation.com/tools/
http://www.siliconprairiesoftware.com/

I do not know these plugins. However, I am sure
they would help you.

Best regards

Winfried

MIF snippet.

1. Open a blank document and edit the variables you want to update.
2. Save as a MIF file.
3. Open the MIF file in a TEXT editor.
4. Delete everything but the code for the variables you want to update.
5. Save and close the file.
6. Open the files you want to update and import variables from the MIF
snippet.
Let me know if you have questions. :)

Hello,

I'd like to update the definition for the system variable "Running H/F1"
for hundreds of FrameMaker 7.2 files. I don't want to update other user
variables, so I can't use the Import > Formats > Variable definitions
method.

Does anyone know of a painless way of doing this?
