Another suggestion from the book I mentioned is to help readers follow 
horizontally in wide tables by inserting blank lines periodically -- 
every 6th line, for example. The resulting 5-line groups are easy to 
follow across.  I quite agree that dashed lines would be a distracting 
nuisance.
