Why a character format won't stick?

I am using Frame 11.0.2.384 on Windows 7.

This is driving me nuts. I apply a character format to, say, a cross reference. I save the document. I close the book and close Frame. I re-open Frame and the book...and the cross reference has returned to the previous character format. I cannot remember what to do to make the new format stick. Can anyone put me out of my misery? Thanks ion advance.
