Using pdfs in Frame12...cue some spooky music

Well, FrameMaker is not a very reliable and handy tool for editing
graphics.
There may be better and more accurate tools for this like Adobe
Illustrator. 

Concerning your question about cropping: 

a) The easiest way would be to work with pixel-related formats like
tiff, not with postscript-formats like eps or pdf. 

b) If cropping is not effective throughout the whole workflow on a pdf,
you may simply place the whole pdf in a frame as described in step (4),
but then reduce the size of the frame according to the requested
cropping. 

c) There may be tools that can crop postscript information. 
I once worked with Quite Imposing to produce a booklet and found that
postscript information from the original pdf that had been (invisible)
outside the page frame was in fact completely removed in the booklet.
Maybe somebody else in the forum has a good idea how to deal with it.
